Authorities in Al-Sulaymaniyah launched a broad inspection campaign on Saturday targeting food warehouses in the city’s industrial area, amid concerns that Iraq’s recent dollar-rate increase could drive up prices.
Baban Ahmed, head of the joint inspection committees at Al-Sulaymaniyah district administration, told Shafaq News that the committees are monitoring warehouses and commercial markets to check prices, food quality and compliance with regulations, with inspections set to continue in the coming days.

Ahmed warned that traders or shop owners found imposing unjustified price increases would face legal penalties. “We reassure citizens that we will not tolerate any violations,” he said at a press conference.
Iraq introduced a new exchange-rate structure this week, with the Central Bank of Iraq buying dollars from the Finance Ministry at 1,500 dinars per dollar, selling them to banks at 1,510 and to the public at 1,520, up from the previous end-user rate of 1,320.
The change has fueled concern across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region over higher prices for food and other essential goods, particularly because local markets rely heavily on imports priced in US dollars.
