The Shengal Enlightenment Conference continues with discussions on culture, faith, country, state, natural society, and ecology. Kendal Çiya, a member of the Academy of Social Science, gave a presentation titled “Country-Patriotism and Ecology in the Shadow of Plunder and Genocide.”
Kendal Çiya stated that many states in the Middle East have imposed themselves on Kurdistan and Êzîdxan (Yazidi land), saying: “The Yazidis were faced with such heavy genocidal campaigns and looting that they could only protect themselves as a secret. From Serhed to Botan, from Afrin to Behdinan, the Yazidis, the ancient people of these lands, were squeezed into Mount Shengal and surrounded. Deprived of fresh water, the Yazidis were forced to survive on bitter water.”
Kendal Çiya continued: “Protecting our country is only possible by building our own identity and developing our own thoughts and philosophy. Most importantly, we must eliminate the policy of denial and annihilation against the Yazidis. We will tear down the borders drawn around us within our country. The people’s insistence on returning to their homeland despite all the attacks directed against Shengal demonstrates their attachment to their land. Our existence is not possible in the camps of the Barzanis or in the camps in Europe. We cannot live without a country, and that country is Shengal.”
Journalist Ibrahim Ezidi gave a presentation on “State Civilization, Ferman, and the Yazidi Society. Referring to genocides suffered by the Yazidi community throughout their history, which they call fermans (named after the term of decrees in the Ottoman Empire), Ibrahim Ezidi said: “We are known as the Ferman community; our first name is Ferman and our last name is Ferman. The real question that needs to be asked is: What is Ferman, and why has it been imposed on us for thousands of years? Regarding the historical resistance of the Yazidis, Leader Abdullah Öcalan says, ‘The roots of the Yazidis’ resistance may lie in the wars and conflicts between the Aryan tribes and Semitic tribes in the mountains, perhaps even dating back to the Sumerians.’ The Yazidi society is in conflict with the state, power, and civilization. At its core, the state system is a ferman system. The sword of the ferman rose above the natural society and dealt a severe blow to tribes, clans, and ancient beliefs. Since then, the ferman and genocide against the people have continued. Therefore, we must analyze this 5,000-year-old civilization correctly.
From the moment it was established, the state civilization attacked ‘society, nature, and women’ the most. The Yazidi community and Yazidism, on the other hand, sanctified ‘society, nature, and women’ the most. In other words, we protected and sanctified what the state attacked the most. We protected “social morality, nature, and women” to the best of our ability. This is our greatest secret and truth. That is why the Yazidi community and Yazidism have never been able to come to terms with state civilization.”
