A documentary film commemorates Kurdish journalist Gülistan Tara one year after her death. The film, entitled “Gulistan Tara: Ronahiya Rastiyê” (English: “The Light of Truth”), will be shown on Saturday evening (August 23) at 8 p.m. on Stêrk TV.

Tara was killed in a Turkish drone strike on August 23, 2023, in the Seyîdsadiq district east of the Sulaymaniyah province in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq), together with her colleague Hêro Bahadîn. She had previously worked as a reporter in the region for many years, including in Rojava and South Kurdistan.

The work of journalist Ali Güler sheds light on Tara’s professional career, her personality, and her relationships. In addition to family members, colleagues also have their say.

Filmmaker Güler explained that the film was intended to remind viewers of the difficult working conditions faced by media professionals. “All over the world, journalists are threatened, persecuted, or killed—especially in war zones. In Turkey and the Middle East in particular, reporters have been the target of repression for decades,” he said.

“In the 1990s, Kurdish media workers were killed for reporting on village destruction and political murders. Today, it happens through bombings,” Güler said. He ststed that Tara is an example of how dangerous the work of critical media remains in the region.
