The National Committee for the Investigation of Truth, established by the interim government in Syria in March to investigate the massacres in Latakia and Tartus, defended HTS and other mercenary groups within the army. The report stated that at least 1,426 people, including 90 women, were killed on the Syrian coast but did not disclose the names of the killers.

Commission Chairman Jumaa Al-Anzi stated that they had compiled a list of 298 “suspect” individuals involved in the Alawite massacre and 265 suspects who participated in the initial attack against security forces.

Spokesperson Yasser Farhan said that the names have not been disclosed yet, but that they have been referred to the courts for investigation. He added that 31 people have been arrested, including six people described as “remnants” of the former regime.

Farhan noted that approximately 200,000 armed individuals from across the country had traveled to the region after remnants of the Baath regime killed 238 members of the security forces affiliated with the Damascus army. He claimed that the attacks against Alawites were “widespread but not organized.”
