A Los Angeles court has ruled that the man accused of fatally stabbing veteran actor James Handy is mentally unfit to stand trial, bringing criminal proceedings to a temporary halt as officials move the case into mental health treatment proceedings.

Michael Gledhill, 44, was arrested following the death of 81-year-old James Handy, who was found unconscious and critically injured outside his home in Tarzana on June 3. Emergency responders later confirmed that Handy had suffered fatal stab wounds.
Authorities say Gledhill contacted law enforcement himself shortly after the incident, making alarming statements during the call, including: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Court proceedings revealed that Gledhill did not appear at a recent competency hearing, with his legal representatives informing the court that he declined transport from jail. His defense team attended in his place as psychiatric evaluations were reviewed.
Following medical assessments, the court determined that Gledhill currently lacks the capacity to understand the legal process or assist in his defense. A judge subsequently ruled him incompetent to stand trial and ordered that he undergo involuntary psychiatric treatment, including medication, for a period of up to one year under clinical supervision.

The case has now been transferred into mental health court, where officials will monitor his condition and determine whether competency can be restored in the future. If he improves, prosecutors may resume efforts toward a murder trial, with a further hearing scheduled for July.
Gledhill is the adult son of James Handy’s long-term partner, Wendy. Family members, including his father and stepmother, attended the hearing, while Wendy did not appear in court.

Handy, a seasoned character actor with more than 150 screen credits, built a decades-long career in television and film beginning in the late 1970s. His work included roles in major productions such as Jumanji, Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, Beverly Hills 90210, and The Young and the Restless.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Wendy disclosed that Gledhill had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in mid-2025 and had been prescribed medication, which he reportedly stopped taking shortly before the incident occurred.
The case continues to draw widespread attention across the entertainment community as legal and psychiatric evaluations proceed.
