The Women’s Council at the Washokani Camp in Hesekê, where IDPs from Serêkaniyê live, issued a statement demanding the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, who has been incarcerated in İmralı Island Prison since 1999 when he was handed over to Turkey as a result of an international conspiracy.

The press statement was read by Council Member Heyat Şêxê in front of the Women’s Council building, accompanied by a large crowd.

The statement emphasized that the freedom of Öcalan means the honor and freedom of the peoples as he is a “symbol of resistance, freedom, and justice” for all groups fighting for an equal and dignified life.

Describing the isolation imposed on Öcalan in İmralı as a “policy of torture and genocide,” the statement said: “This system aims to break the will to resist and fight for freedom. However, the strong will and libertarian ideas of the Leader are spreading and growing stronger every day.”

The Women’s Council appealed to the international community and legal organizations, emphasizing that lifting the isolation of Öcalan and securing his physical freedom is an “urgent necessity for the establishment of justice and the construction of real peace.”

The Women’s Council said they considered Öcalan’s ideas as the basis for women’s freedom and social freedom, and vowed to keep fighting until he’s free.

The statement ended with the women chanting “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (Woman, Life, Freedom).
