Democratic Union Party (PYD) Co-Chair Xerîb Hiso spoke to ANHA News Agency about recent developments in Syria, the period that followed the collapse of the Assad regime, and the future of the country. Hiso emphasized that the Syrian people are now conscious of the need for a democratic system and are actively engaged in a struggle to achieve it.
Hiso noted that the period following the fall of the Assad regime witnessed rapid and dangerous developments that captured the attention of the international public. He said, “The fact that an organization still listed as a terrorist group was able to reach the gates of Damascus so easily became a serious source of concern for the international community.”
Unilateral approaches are driving the country into danger’
Xerîb Hiso stated that the arrival of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the attempts to form a “transitional government” based on a single political line have deepened the divisions within Syria, creating a breeding ground for dangerous ideological conflicts. He added that the support of some international actors for these unilateral approaches is dragging the country into even greater peril.
Hiso stressed that Syria can no longer be governed through a monist mindset. He said, “A genuine solution is only possible through the construction of a pluralistic, democratic, and multicultural system that includes all ethnic, religious, and political components.” Hiso further remarked that the current war has evolved into a struggle between democracy and authoritarian power. He warned, “Syria must embark on a democratic path in which all peoples and social groups are recognized. Otherwise, the denial of democracy will bring chaos and internal conflict.”
The demand for democracy is rising across all regions
Xerîb Hiso stated that the people of Syria are now demanding a democratic system, and that this demand has already taken a concrete form in Northern and Eastern Syria. He added that similar demands are emerging in other parts of the country as well. He said, “In Syria’s coastal regions, as well as in Suwayda (Siweida), Homs, Hama and Idlib, the people are weary of war and tragedy. They now believe that the only way out of this situation is the establishment of a democratic system that guarantees their rights.”
Hiso concluded his remarks, saying: “Ultimately, democracy will prevail in Syria.”
