Sorayya Ali-Mohammadi, a 32-year-old woman from Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, has died after her husband set her on fire following a “family dispute”.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN) reported that Ali-Mohammadi, a mother of a seven-year-old child, had previously tried several times to leave her husband due to his drug use and ongoing domestic disputes. However, she was forced to stay in the marriage due to a lack of support from her family.
The incident took place on 2 September, when an argument broke out between the couple. Her husband took her to the parking area of their home, poured petrol over her and set her alight.
Neighbours rushed her to Shafa Hospital in Saqqez, where she was treated for severe burns. However, she passed away within hours due to severe injuries.
The young woman’s funeral was held the following day at Aichi Cemetery in Saqqez.
Police in Saqqez confirmed the arrest of her husband on charges of premeditated murder.
